"According to legend, the Nego d'Água (Black Merman of the Water) dwells in the waters of various brazilian rivers, usually appearing to fishermen. Manifesting himself with his laughter, black figure and amphibious features, he turns the fishermen's boat if they refuse to give him a fish. Some fishermen tends to carve Carrancas (monstrous faces made of wood) on their boats to scare away the Nego d'Água."
